THE LANDAU AND ARTESIAN – VIBRANT DAVID COLLINS DESIGNED SETTINGS AT THE HEART OF THE NEWLY REFURBISHED LANGHAM, LONDON.
April 2009
With a new entrance on Portland Place just off Regent Street, the striking, sweeping façade now conceals a jigsaw of fresh and contemporary spaces designed by David Collins Studio including the elegant The Landau restaurant, Postillion, its 16-seat private dining room, and Artesian, a glamorous cocktail bar. These destination venues epitomise the remarkable transformation of The Langham, London - Europe’s first ‘Grand Hotel’.

With its name inspired by the 365 foot deep well under the hotel which originally supplied all the fresh water for guests, Artesian is an über chic watering hole for contemporary Londoners. David Collins’ brilliant interiors are described as “combining hints of exotic Orientalism with the romance of Victorian nostalgia and some stylish contemporary touches.” The chic and romantic designs blend a sense of the past with a palpable sense of modern luxury.
Alongside an expansive list of cocktails, Artesian specialises in rum with exclusive signature rum cocktails. Ed Viita, Artesian’s Rum Ambassador, has sourced around
70 different rums including Artesian’s two own label rums that have been especially imported in barrels from Guyana and Panama, left to mature and then exclusively bottled.
The Langham’s tradition for innovation even extends to the ice which, through the latest technology, is purer, colder and with a higher density; it lasts longer and makes the cocktails colder and more potent.
Rum features especially strongly on Monday nights, when Artesian is the venue for Dominoes and Daiquiris. Priced at £55 for two, it includes two Daiquiris each, a sharing platter for two (a choice of Antipasto, Meze, or Chinese) and the use of a domino set and a sheet of rules.
For the indecisive or the cocktail novice, the Cocktail Grazing list offers choices of cocktails and rums in four smaller taster servings allowing guests to gain an insight and flavour of a selection of drinks. Priced from £30 per person.

Named after the carriage that HRH The Prince of Wales rode in to open The Langham, London in 1865, the dramatic décor echoes the feel of Artesian. The oval-shaped restaurant is bright and spacious with striking design features such as gilded timber wall panels, a trio of antique, brass chandeliers and banquette seating with custom-designed gold, jade green and pastel blue leather upholstery. Finishing touches include chinaware by Vera Wang, coat tags by Bill Amberg, plates by Bernardaud, glassware by Riedel and black crystal candle holders by Waterford Crystal.
Andrew Turner’s cuisine entices diners with contemporary European dishes, with the best of British seasonal ingredients and a few intriguing twists. Those familiar with Turner’s food see a more evolved menu, inspired by new cooking methods and techniques. Exceptional ingredients have also been sourced, strengthened by Turner’s collaboration with the Mutton Renaissance, Longoe Farm at Castle of Mey in Scotland and meat from The Ginger Pig, reared on the Yorkshire Moors. His now famous grazing menus have injected new life into the often tired world of dining in a hotel restaurant, allowing diners a choice of a five ,six or seven course menus from which to choose.
