Afternoon Tea at 1865 prices, marks the 146th anniversary of The Langham, London.

May 2011

Afternoon Tea

On 10th June 2011, Palm Court at The Langham, London is offering guests Afternoon Tea for the original price it was served in 1865, marking the hotel’s 146th birthday. For just seven pence, the equivalent of one shilling and sixpence, guests will be able to experience the Wonderland Tea, normally priced at £38.

Afternoon tea can be traced back to 1840 and is widely acknowledged as being invented by Anna, Seventh Duchess of Bedford, to ward off hunger pangs in the long hours between lunch and dinner.

The Langham, London opened as Europe’s first ‘Grand Hotel’ on 10 June 1865 by HRH The Prince of Wales offering an unrivalled location at the top of Regent Street. At the heart of The Langham, the historic Palm Court began serving Afternoon Tea to the cream of Victorian society who gathered to enjoy sandwiches, delicate pastries and cakes and a variety of teas and thus The Langham has since become renowned as the birthplace of this tradition.

Almost a century and a half later, Palm Court is once again serving the finest afternoon tea with its Wonderland Tea receiving the coveted 2010 Top London Afternoon Tea Award from The Tea Guild. This enchanting tradition has now been adopted as a signature of all The Langham hotels around the globe and to mark the anniversary this year, all The Langham hotels will serve afternoon tea for the same price as it was originally offered in 1865.

Once again demand is expected to be very high and a special extra seating at 11.30am will be available with a minimum of 60 Anniversary Teas.
