Enjoy traditional Punch and Judy shows in Covent Garden

London weekend break

Event: Covent Garden Punch and Judy Festival
Date: October 3rd
Venue: Covent Garden Piazza

Visitors to London may like to enjoy an old family pastime at the Covent Garden Punch and Judy Festival.

People on a London weekend break will be treated to a number of free traditional puppet shows being held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Punch and Judy Fellowship, reports Visit London.

A dozen shows will be held throughout the day, starting at 11am, and a number of Punch and Judy Professors from across the country will be showcasing their skills.

These puppet shows originated in 15th century Italy and became a well-known form of family entertainment at the seaside.

Samuel Pepys, the famous diarist, mentioned Mr Punch performing at Covent Garden in his diary in 1662.

Those on a London weekend break could catch a show in between sightseeing and shopping.

The Covent Garden piazza houses several fashionable boutiques, an arts and crafts market and a cafe. Outside, street performers display their skills.

After enjoying a free show at the Covent Garden Punch and Judy Festival, children can rest their weary heads at the best London hotel - the 5 star Langham.
