Some of the world's most celebrated literati will be present at the London Literature Festival, which kicks off this week (July 1st).

The event is sure to be a hit with dedicated bookworms as much as it is with people looking for a spot of culture and insight during a London weekend getaway.

Among those speaking during the 18-day event are Bret Easton Ellis and Brazilian football legend Socrates.

The festival is not simply a list of readers, however. Visitors can take part in or watch a number of events, including discussions, performances and displays.

There is even the opportunity for amateur authors to attend the Creative Writing Summer School.

The Southbank Centre Book Club will also run a number of sessions.

For the more philosophical, the much-celebrated Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek will be giving a talk on July 5th.
